How neurofeedback is done

It is simple, quiet and painless. Here is what happens, step by step, in plain words.

The short version

Neurofeedback is like a mirror for your brain. You get to see how it is doing, right now, and your brain learns by practicing.

Think about learning to ride a bike. At first it is wobbly. With practice, you get steadier, and soon you do not have to think about it. Neurofeedback works the same way. Each session is practice for finding calm and focus.

Three things to know

  • It does not hurt.
  • Nothing goes into your brain.
  • You do not have to talk about anything hard to do it.

What a session looks like

Sessions last about 30 minutes.

  1. Say hello and get comfortable

You sit in a comfy chair. We check in about how you slept, how your week has been, and what you want to work on.

  2. Sensors go on

We place a few small sensors on your head and ears. They only listen. Nothing goes into your brain. It does not hurt.

  3. Watch a show or listen to music

You relax. While you watch or listen, the picture and sound react to your brain.

  4. Your brain learns what works

When your brain makes calm, steady patterns, the picture stays bright and the sound plays well. When it drifts off, the picture dims or the sound goes quiet. Your brain notices, and it learns to head back toward the steady pattern.

  5. Sensors come off, and you go on with your day

Most people feel relaxed. A few feel a little tired or a little wired for a bit. Tell us how you feel and we adjust.

Start with a brain map

A brain map is like a photo of how your brain is running today, and it is required to start a plan. Sensors rest on your head while you sit comfortably. The visit can take around an hour, and the reading is done during that time. You also fill out intake forms and questionnaires, so we get a full picture. We review the reading afterward and schedule a follow-up consultation within a couple of weeks of your map to go over it in plain words and plan your sessions.

How often, and for how long?

Our plans are built around 40 sessions, about 30 minutes each, two to three times a week. We check progress about every 10 sessions. Some people choose to continue beyond 40, with changes to their program and desired outcomes. We talk through your plan before you start.

Why we often start with sleep

Sleep is often the most under-rated need, and one of the best places to start. When we work on healthy, steady sleep, other symptoms often ease too. For some people, better sleep ends up being the main treatment.

What neurofeedback is not

  • It is not a cure, and we do not promise a specific result.
  • It does not replace your doctor or your medicine.
  • It is not a quick fix. It takes practice, like building any skill.

Is it a good fit for me?

Many people try neurofeedback for focus, worry, trauma stress, sleep and performance. The best way to find out is a free consultation. We will listen, answer your questions, and tell you honestly if we think it could help.

Common questions

Will it hurt?

No. The sensors only listen. Nothing goes into your brain, and there are no shocks.

Do I have to talk about my past?

No. The brain training itself does not need you to talk through your story. You can simply relax and watch or listen.

Can I keep taking my medicine?

Yes. Neurofeedback does not replace medical care. Please keep working with your doctor, and never change a medicine without their okay.

How long is a session?

About 30 minutes. Most people come two to three times a week.

How long until I notice a change?

It varies. Some people notice small changes, like falling asleep more easily, within the first few weeks. Bigger goals often take longer. We check in about every 10 sessions.

Is there a guarantee?

No. Honest answer: results differ from person to person. We will tell you what we see and adjust the plan as we go.
